The area is also known for its excellent cattle and for the Rolleston open cut coal mine which is located 16 km west of the town. Early reports state that there was evidence of gold-bearing quartz being found 'along the divide in metasediments on the eastern extremity of the alluvial deposits' but this was never worked.
